You can see green flashes with the eye, sometimes, if you are looking toward a very clear horizon. You must be looking just at sunset, at the last moment before the sun disappears below the horizon. And you have to be careful . . .if you look too soon, the light of the sunset will dazzle your eyes, and you'll miss that day's green flash.

If you are in southwest Georgia or northeast Florida, on Tuesday evening April 17th, you might see the star Iota Cancri blink out as an asteroid named Xanthe passes in front of it. This type of event is called an occultation. The asteroid's orbit takes it right in front of a star, and the star appears to wink out or drop in brightness.

A million miles from planet Earth, last weekend the STEREO B spacecraft found itself in the shadow of the Moon. Locked in synchronous rotation, the Moon always presents its well-known near side to Earth. But from lunar orbit, Apollo astronauts also grew to know the Moon's far side. This sharp picture from Apollo 16's mapping camera shows the eastern edge of the familiar near side and the strange and heavily cratered far side of the Moon.

Imagine a world orbiting a star in a binary system. Two stars would shine in the day, and the rare nights would occur only when both stars had set below the horizon. Now astronomers have discovered a world where this is the case - the sunsets would be spectacular. [via universetoday]

Imagine a world with no land at all, merely the impenetrable depths of a seething ocean. Models of planet formation predict the existence of such worlds, even though our own solar system has none. Indeed, their formation should actually be rather common - and new satellites may soon detect them around other stars.
